North Sea platforms fall silent to mark 35th anniversary of Piper Alpha

06/07/2023

North Sea platforms will fall silent today to mark the 35th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster.

The tragedy on July 6th 1988 claimed the lives of 167 men on board and remains the worst incident in the history of the oil and gas sector.

Harbour Energy is among the companies stopping to observe a one-minute silence at 10am this morning.

Onshore, a memorial service will take place in Hazlehead Park, led by oil and gas chaplain Reverend Gordon Craig.

The service will include the reading of the names of the 167 men lost, followed by a minute's silence and a piper's lament.

Reverend Craig said the service provides a space for families to remember and feel their loss, but also to show that the wider industry will never forget.
