Whiting Petroleum Corporation is one of the largest independent exploration and production companies in the USA with an oil focused asset base. The company control one of the largest acreage positions in the Bakken/Three Forks resource play in the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana with 407,101 net acres in the oil productive sweet spots of the basin. From the Bakken and Three Forks resource play Whiting Petroleum have consistently been a top oil producer in North Dakota and across the Williston Basin. In the new and large oil prone sweet spot of the eastern DJ Basin of Colorado, the company have 95,416 net acres.

History

Whiting Petroleum Corporation was founded in January 1980 in Denver, Colorado by Kenneth R. Whiting, with co-founder Bert Ladd. Mr. Whiting served as President and Chief Executive Officer until 1993 and as a director until 2008.

In 1983, Whiting Petroleum merged with Keba Oil & Gas and Hingeline-Overthrust to become a public company.

In 1992, Alliant Energy, a Midwest public utility, acquired Whiting Petroleum as a wholly owned subsidiary. In November 2003, Whiting Petroleum again became a public company when our IPO was completed.

Since their founding, Whiting have been an independent oil and gas company that acquires, exploits, develops and explores for crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids, primarily in the Rocky Mountain region and the Permian Basin.  Today the company is focused in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States.
