  • The projects would cover 20% of the national objective -which foresees 4GW of power by 2030-, would contribute to the creation of a local H 2 industry and would generate 4,000 jobs, through 500 local suppliers
  • The plan would boost an innovation and industrial pole with high growth potential, such as the manufacture of electrolysers, and would promote economic and social revitalization in territories facing the demographic challenge.
  • The largest green hydrogen complex for industrial use in Europe will be operational in 2021 in Puertollano, after an investment of 150 million euros

Green hydrogen is already a reality for the alliance formed by Iberdrola and Fertiberia, a key factor on the path towards climate neutrality and could make Spain an industrial leader in this sector if the comprehensive project of both companies, which contemplates the development of 800 MW of green hydrogen, with an investment of 1.8 billion euros over the next seven years.

The innovation initiative will start with the start-up of the largest green hydrogen complex for industrial use in Europe, which will be operational in just one year in Puertollano, and could be completed with a plan to multiply the capacity of this first plant by 40 times with the development of three other projects between 2023 and 2027, at the Fertiberia de Puertollano (Ciudad Real) and Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) plants.

This was announced this week by Ignacio Galán, president of Iberdrola, together with Javier Goñi, president of Fertiberia, in the presentation of “a great project that can make our country the first with 100% production of ammonia for completely green fertilizers”. The project arises from an alliance, "which puts all our capabilities at the disposal of this unprecedented transformation process," he pointed out. “An alliance that is not based on mere intentions, but on concrete facts. Once again, we are once again pioneers in the implementation of a new clean technology, green hydrogen, and we do it together with the best partner, Fertiberia”.

The president made reference to the European Union's green hydrogen strategy. “These are ambitious plans that aim to put Europe at the world forefront in this technology,” explained the president of Iberdrola, “and which require industrial companies willing to face the transformation of their production processes; from suppliers of equipment prepared to produce electrolysis infrastructures on a large scale, with increasingly efficient and competitive equipment; of companies with the investment and execution capacity necessary to generate and supply the precise amounts of green energy; and the aid of the European Union to make these projects a reality ”
