Students from Aberdeen universities have today been announced as the North of Scotland winners of The 2020 Institute of Measurement and Control Student Awards.

The awards, which are in their second year and sponsored by Aberdeen-based business Dräger Marine and Offshore, aim to identify and encourage engineering talent in the North of Scotland.

Megan Hine, Account Manager at Dräger Marine and Offshore, and Programme Manager at InstMC North of Scotland said: 
"Knowledge and expertise of measurement and control topics is a key skill for many careers in engineering, especially here in Aberdeen, home of the North Sea Oil and Gas industry. For example, it is critical in the spheres of gas detection and monitoring and consequently key to the safety of operations offshore.

"These awards seek to highlight and support the next generation of engineering talent in the North of Scotland, talent which will be crucial in driving forward the future economy of the area, particularly as the focus increasingly shifts towards renewable energy.”

Peter Scott, one of the award winners from Robert Gordon University (RGU|) commented on the achievement: "I am absolutely thrilled to be presented with the Institute of Measurement and Control award, for Stage 2 of my graduate apprenticeship.

"As a mature student, it is tough going at times fitting in study with full time work and a busy homelife. However, this type of recognition makes me feel that all the hard work is worthwhile. My employer Diageo has been very supportive, and the eventual qualification will stand me in good stead for career progression."

While Callum Knight, an award winner from Aberdeen University said: 
"This prestigious award came as a very pleasant surprise! I've always been fascinated by the subject of measurement and control, and how it can be applied to bring autonomy to virtually any process.

"Having just started my career as a Software Engineer, I now find myself implementing measurement and control algorithms using code, so such an award is sure to provide great benefit in helping me progress moving forward."

Megan Hine concluded: 
"While this year’s winners miss out on our usual prestigious annual dinner, their achievement is no less significant. The awards are given based on outstanding achievement, so I offer many congratulations to all of our 2020 winners.”

The InstMC makes a series of prestigious awards each year that recognise excellence and achievement in measurement and control. The student awards were introduced for the first time in 2019.
