Remote wells under control from the InWell room at Campus Repsol

10/11/2020

With the collaboration of GEOLOG, InWell is a Real Time Operational Center (RTOC) where drilling and completions operations around the globe are monitored. This allows the sharing of knowledge between specialists and allows operational interventions in near real time, even if physically distanced from the rigsite. The 24/7 RTOC creates a more centralised and efficient method of improving safety and utilising resources, with expertise and knowledge sharing contributing to the prevention of issues, operating more effectively and efficiently, and enhancing financial performance.

From the outset, the large number of screens (around 40) is the most impressive thing about the InWell room at Campus Repsol. However, knowing its operation and usefulness makes an even greater impression. And it is that this highly technical space connects and monitors in real time all the drilling processes in the company's wells located anywhere in the world. This allows all the knowledge of Repsol technicians to be available at the foot of the operation, even though they are physically thousands of kilometers away. In addition, in this way the safety and sustainability of the reserve extraction processes is reinforced.

Inwell centralizes control of Repsol's drilling processes around the world

“InWell is an integrated operations center that behaves like a hub, connected to all global drilling and completion activities - five wells were followed at the same time last year - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. the week ”, highlights Renata Martin, Product Owner (responsible) of InWell. In operation for just over a year, InWell has completely changed the way drilling and completion operations work. As Miriam Gómez, Inwell's Technical Lead, explains, “Before, each asset monitored the information from the country itself. The data came to control in a somewhat scattered way, so the collaboration between Madrid and the countries was more complex. Currently, by accessing information centrally and in real time, it is done much more efficiently ”.

According to Renata Martin, “in drilling, any unplanned stop, a non-operational time, implies a very high cost. But today we know what happens at the moment and we influence so that the best performance of the wells is constantly pursued, avoiding lost time due to non-optimized tasks or procedures. In addition, we share much more information between countries ”. The head of Inwell emphasizes that "we do not work as a central to solve possible problems, but we try to prevent them from occurring."  In fact, one of InWell's main objectives is the prevention of critical events, strengthening security and guaranteeing the success of the operation. “The monitoring of the information transmitted by the wells and the production of engineering analysis allows us to better interpret the events".

Economic benefits

The constant and detailed monitoring of data from the oil rigs centralized from InWell has had, to date, a total impact of 16 million euros. And it is estimated that in 2022 these benefits will reach 62 million euros. In addition to cost and time savings, InWell contributes to Repsol's goal of having wells that are more sustainable and respectful of the environment.
