FutureOn and McDermott partner to share digital insights to aid the energy transition

08/03/2021

FutureOn, the global software company specialising in the energy sector has joined forces with McDermott to discuss how transformative digital twin technology will accelerate the energy transition at the 2021 Australasian Oil & Gas (AOG) Exhibition and Conference, taking place 10-11 March in Perth, WA.

A case study, which will be presented by Dr. Subrata Bhowmik, a Senior Data Scientist at McDermott and Suba Rohrman, FutureOn’s Vice President of Asia Pacific, on 10 March at 11:30am, will form part of the highly anticipated Subsea Forum taking place at AOG.

The Subsea Forum, which is jointly hosted by the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), Subsea Energy Australia (SEA) and Subsea UK, will see FutureOn and McDermott joined by Woodside, Chevron and Wood who will deliver presentations focused on the future of subsea, including digitisation, innovation and renewable energy.

Now in its 40th year, AOG connects the oil and gas supply chain with the world’s major operators by creating a platform for idea sharing and innovation. This year, AOG focuses on the future of clean energy with an emphasis on the latest technologies across renewables, hydrogen and emissions reduction.

FutureOn and McDermott will come together to present best practice and real-life examples of how digital field twin technology can support offshore hydrogen projects, allowing operators to visualise and compare different conceptual designs using either new or existing infrastructures. This includes providing realistic cost assessments, infrastructure re-use feasibility assessments and wind farm design optimization, helping them identify the most appropriate concept.

As part of the presentation, McDermott will showcase a case study which highlights how FutureOn’s award-winning SaaS field design application, FieldAP, was used to support the development of a digital hydrogen cluster concept, which features various transportation options using green hydrogen. The concept marks a world-first when it comes to developing digital hydrogen clusters in a digital field twin, and is expected to play a significant role in accelerating the energy transition.

Suba Rohrman, Vice President of Asia Pacific at FutureOn, said:
“Green hydrogen is an integral part of any nation’s roadmap for the net zero journey, and this must be underpinned by innovation if we are to truly capitalize on the opportunities on offer. Digital twin technologies can unlock significant value throughout the entire hydrogen chain from identifying areas for cost savings to reducing the environmental impact of the development.

“We are very proud that McDermott has chosen to use FutureOn’s FieldAP technology solution to support the planning stage of a major green hydrogen project, and we are looking forward to sharing our insights and learnings with our peers at this year’s AOG, which is one of the most well attended energy events in the calendar each year.

“By collaborating on pioneering solutions and low carbon projects, we can accelerate the energy transition as part of a future global industry worth trillions.”

According to the Hydrogen Council, hydrogen could meet almost one-fifth of the world’s energy demands by 2050, if deployed at scale. That would reduce annual carbon emissions by roughly six gigatons compared to today’s levels. Overall, it predicts the annual demand for hydrogen could increase ten-fold by 2050.

Last year, McDermott joined the Hydrogen Council, a CEO-led global initiative which brings together leading energy, transport and industrial companies with a united vision and long-term ambition for hydrogen to foster the energy transition. This saw McDermott form part of the council’s Investor Group, which focuses on supporting major investment into large-scale commercialization of hydrogen solutions across industries world-wide.
