Creating ripple effects across the North Sea

12/03/2021

The oil and gas industry is global, and large projects can create jobs across the North Sea in the UK, as well as in Norway.

The Snorre Expansion Project, which recently came on stream offshore Norway, received some giant deliveries from Scotland - approximately 34,000 tonnes to be exact. This important contract to make huge gathering pipes, known as bundles, was awarded to Subsea 7’s operations base in Wick.

“Equinor creates jobs and ripple effects for suppliers and communities, both from our broad energy activities in the UK, as well as from our extensive portfolio on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and globally. Collaboration with our suppliers is increasingly important as we advance the energy transition together,” says Arne Gürtner, SVP, UK and Ireland Offshore.

Subsea 7 also has a long list of UK suppliers. Global Energy Group in Invergordon delivered the massive tow heads, which were maneuvered elegantly through the town of Wick, by Osprey and Allelys, before arriving at the Subsea 7 site in Wester. The carrier pipes are produced by Liberty in Hartlepool, the pipe-in-pipe sleeves were delivered from Tata Steelwork in Hartlepool, the clamps that keep the pipes together inside the carrier pipe were delivered by GOWS in Lybster, and the small bore valves came from Pacson Valves in Dundee – and these are just a few of the many suppliers.

In addition, TechnipFMC was awarded the contract for the Snorre Expansion Project subsea production systems and delivered umbilicals from Newcastle and Christmas trees from Dunfermline.
