Wind Energy Ireland has commissioned Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) to investigate the role that green hydrogen is likely to play in the energy Transition in Ireland over the period 2021-2030. Green hydrogen is hydrogen fuel, created using renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. Potentially, it will provide clean power for manufacturing, transportation, and more — and its only by-product is water. It has been considered an expensive option but as economies of scale continue to reduce equipment costs, it is important to maintain investigations into its viability.
The price delta to allow competition with other fuels - for a range of different applications – will also be investigated. This will allow the identification of the subsidy / incentive required, to support pricing competition.
Additionally, the project will investigate the job creation potential of green hydrogen, to 2030. The Hydrogen Europe Roadmap estimates up to one million jobs being available in green hydrogen in Europe by 2030 and GDG will explore this further and assess the potential economic impact and training requirements.
