OGTC has today completed its repositioning to become the Net Zero Technology Centre, reflecting the natural evolution of the Centre as it continues to accelerate the development and deployment of technology to enable a net zero energy future.

To date, the Net Zero Technology Centre has co-invested £176m with industry, screened more than 1,300 technologies and generated £10-15 billion GVA potential. Over 64 field trials have been delivered, with another 49 planned and underway, over 20 technologies have been commercialised and 33 tech start-ups supported.

Last year, the Centre transitioned its seven existing solution centres into one Net Zero Solution Centre, with three core programmes, focused on reducing emissions, developing integrated energy systems and unlocking a digitised offshore energy sector.

A key part of this transformation was redefining the Centre’s technology roadmap following extensive engagement with industry and stakeholders, which has resulted in a comprehensive set of technology themes and priorities underpinning the Net Zero Technology Centre’s work.

Colette Cohen, CEO at the Net Zero Technology Centre said:
“Innovating and developing technology is critical to unlock an affordable net zero energy future. It is essential we invest in and commercialise solutions that accelerate the energy transition and reimagine the North Sea as an integrated energy basin.

“There is no silver bullet when it comes to the technology required. We must prioritise affordable energy solutions while decarbonising oil and gas, which will be required for years to come to meet global demand.

“Our focus on transition technologies began when we opened our doors four years ago, driven by strong demand from industry.

“We see a tremendous opportunity to build exciting new partnerships and alliances as we continue to develop and deploy technology to create an affordable net zero energy industry.”

The UK and Scottish governments are each investing £90 million in the Net Zero Technology Centre as part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal – a £340 million investment programme jointly funded by the UK and Scottish governments and regional partners. 

UK Government Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove said:
“Industries across the UK are seizing the opportunities of our pivot to net zero.

“Our energy transition will only be possible by working closely with the energy sector and the Net Zero Technology Centre embodies the strength of that partnership.

“By investing in new technologies and innovation the UK will continue to lead the world in tackling climate change while protecting and creating new jobs. Together we will build back greener and better from the pandemic.”

UK Government Minister for Scotland David Duguid said:
“The timely renaming shows how the Aberdeen City Region Deal is adapting to help the North Sea economy harness its existing capabilities, infrastructure and private investment to deliver hydrogen production, carbon capture and storage, offshore wind and decommissioning.

“In addition to its £90 million City Deal investment in the Net Zero Technology Centre, the UK Government is providing support for decommissioning and the North Sea Transition Deal, ensuring workers, businesses, and the supply chain are able to effectively manage the move to net zero.”

Economy Secretary Kate Forbes said:
“I fully support the Net Zero Technology Centre rebranding, which aligns with their fresh purpose of supporting the oil and gas industry to develop and deploy technology to accelerate the transition to an affordable net zero North Sea.

“They are also one of our key partners in the Aberdeen City Region Deal, which is backed by £125 million of Scottish Government funding over 10 years, contributing to the region’s economic recovery by creating jobs and providing the commercial infrastructure to support and attract businesses to Aberdeen and the surrounding areas.

“This is a crucial time for business, trade and investment in Scotland and investing in our communities will ensure every part of Scotland recovers from the pandemic, helping build an economy for everyone.”

Councillor Jenny Laing, Vice-Chair of the Aberdeen City Region Deal Joint Committee said: 
“Reflecting the challenges within the offshore energy sector, the OGTC is a major project in the Aberdeen City Region Deal. Today’s announcement is a response to these challenges and the diversification within the energy and renewables sector. It marks the natural evolution of the Centre as it continues to accelerate technology to enable a net zero energy future and aligns to city region’s ambitions to maximise the economic and employment benefits from Net Zero and Energy Transition for the Aberdeen region.”
