Bilfinger wins another order for Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant

23/07/2021
  • Five-year contract for inspection services with an order volume of more than EUR 20 million
  • Use of non-destructive testing procedures ensures system integrity
  • 80 additional jobs will be created in England

The world's second largest power generator, EDF Energy, has commissioned Bilfinger with inspection services for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant . Over the next five years, Bilfinger will use various non-destructive testing methods to ensure the integrity of the safety-critical systems of the power plant under construction in the south-west of England. The order, with a volume of more than EUR 20 million, is booked in tranches in the Engineering & Maintenance Europe segment.

"The work for Hinkley Point C is one of our most important projects and we are proud to expand our scope of services with the inspection contract", says Christina Johansson, Interim CEO and CFO of Bilfinger. “We bundle our competencies across several units in order to provide a comprehensive range of services for our customer EDF. This strength of Bilfinger and the expertise in the technologically demanding area of nuclear power open up further growth opportunities for us."

For its inspection services, Bilfinger uses non-destructive testing (NDT) and advanced non-destructive testing (ANDT) methods in particular at Hinkley Point C. The contract won for the inspection services for Hinkley Point C starts immediately and creates more than 80 new jobs at Bilfinger Salamis UK at locations in Somerset, Bristol and Humberside.

Bilfinger was selected by EDF as a strategic supplier (Tier 1) for the Hinkley Point C project and from 2018 initially received orders for preparatory and planning work as well as for waste treatment. In 2020, Bilfinger was also commissioned with numerous services for NSSS (Nuclear Steam Supply System), BNI (Balance of Nuclear Island) and BoP (Balance of Plant). As a result, the order volume generated at Bilfinger for Hinkley Point C has already risen to over 450 million euros.

In order to be able to offer plant operators a comprehensive inspection service, Bilfinger recently developed the Bilfinger Inspection Concept (BIC) . It is based on the industrial service provider's decades of experience in the inspection of systems and combines various inspection services. Plant operators can thus receive all the necessary examinations - from prefabrication and routine inspections during operation to decommissioning and dismantling - from a single source and as part of a fully integrated package. Bilfinger has the appropriate certifications for all relevant inspection activities.

Hinkley Point C is the first new nuclear power plant to be built in the UK in over 25 years. It should supply around 6 million households with low-carbon electricity.
