Global offshore wind project pipeline exceeds 400 gigawatts

29/09/2021

New research by RenewableUK’s Project Intelligence team shows that the total pipeline of offshore wind projects around the world now stands at 413GW. The pipeline includes projects which are fully operational, under construction, consented or being planned.

In terms of operational capacity, the UK retains its top spot at 10.4GW but China is catching up at 9.4GW and Germany stands at 7.7GW. Globally 35.3GW are fully operational.

Fully operational offshore wind capacity in MW:

The UK has a total pipeline of 63.2GW of offshore wind capacity. China is slightly ahead at 64.4GW and the USA is in third place with 40.5GW. As the pipeline includes projects at all stages of planning including early development, it cannot be assumed that all will be built.

RenewableUK’s Offshore Wind Project Intelligence report is being published at our annual Global Offshore Wind conference and exhibition, which opens today in London.

RenewableUK’s Executive Director Isabel DiVanna said:
“Our latest Project Intelligence report demonstrates the global appetite to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind around the world. It’s especially useful to see where opportunities are arising for offshore wind supply chain companies in the UK to export their knowledge and expertise to new markets. The UK’s global lead in offshore wind means that other countries are coming to us hoping to emulate our success - that’s one of the reasons why we’re welcoming over 3,000 delegates from around the world at our Global Offshore Wind conference and exhibition in London this week”.
