Trias Westland springboard for Westland Heat System

18/10/2021

Earlier this month in Naaldwijk, the Netherlands, the opening of Trias Westland, together with the growers, Jan-Kees Goet, Secretary-General Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and Sandor Gaastra, Director-General Economic Affairs and Climate, was confirmed. With two geothermal sources at a depth of 2.3 km and a 4 km research well, the Trias Westland is the springboard to the Westland Heat System. A large part of this heat network functions as a main pipeline within the Westland Heat System (WSW), the regional heat network in the glass city.

Inspiration for others

“Westland has traditionally been innovative, enterprising and characterized by collaboration. This makes Trias Westland a great inspiration for the heat sector. By being innovative and showing entrepreneurship, Westland shows us that you can shape the heat transition together. But we're not there yet. It's important to move forward now. Such as with the roll-out of the Westland Heat System and the expansion into residential areas and the links with Warmtelinq. I have full confidence in the success and impact of Trias Westland. An inspiration for the rest of the Netherlands," said Sandor Gaastra, Director-General of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

Reservation million note

The upgrading of the main pipeline of the Trias Westland heat network has been made possible by a subsidy from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. A new reservation for the Westland Heat System has been included in the recently issued million-dollar bill from 2022. In addition, the connection with port heat to Leiden (Warmtelinq) is also planned. Jan-Kees Goet, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality: “The regional heat network and thus the linking of local heat projects enables a robust and future-proof heat supply in Westland. Especially in this time with all the developments in the energy market, this is a good example of progressive climate policy in which different parties and sectors, such as greenhouse horticulture, take the initiative, find each other, strengthen and collaborate. We have contributed to this by awarding the subsidy.”

Fruitful collaboration

During the meeting in Naaldwijk, amid gerberas, peppers and orchids, the fruitful collaboration between initiators, financiers, partners and 54 Westland greenhouse horticulture companies was discussed. With a production capacity of more than 40 MWth, Trias Westland is proof of a cooperation model in which the participating greenhouse horticultural entrepreneurs work together through their own cooperative and with large regional parties. The affiliated greenhouse horticultural entrepreneurs of Trias Westland can also trade heat with each other. By exchanging heat on the trading platform, we make optimum use of the available heat.

Towards the Westland Heat System

It was precisely the cooperative collaboration that provided inspiration for further development and collaboration within heat cooperatives in the Westland. This is the start of a robust and future-proof heat supply in an integrated heating system.
