Vietnam commits to Net Zero target by 2050

04/11/2021

Earlier this week, GWEC successfully met with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Mr. Phạm Minh Chính at the GWEC Wind Pavilion in the Blue Zone of the COP26 exhibition, supported by numerous onshore and offshore wind industry senior executives. Together with the Prime Minister was the Minister of Natural Resources Mr. Trần Hồng Hà, the Environment Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and MOFA Minister Mr. Bùi Thanh Sơn, as well as senior leaders of Ministry of Planning and Investment.

The primary policy highlight is the announcement of Vietnam Net Zero target by 2050 - during the meeting with GWEC. This was further reiterated in his later COP speech. Apart from the Net Zero by 2050 commitment by the PM, Minister Dian of MOIT made a comment at a roundtable event on the same day, saying that Vietnam would embark on a roadmap to reduce coal-fired power generation and double the wind and solar target to 31-38GW by 2030.

This new indicative target means another 13-20GW new capacity between solar and wind leading up to 2030, which indicate a fundamental revamp of the latest draft of PDP8 in October with a strong focus on solar and wind and a significant cutting of the coal target.
