Total Eren launches studies aiming to develop large-scale hydrogen project in Chile

03/12/2021

Total Eren, a leading renewable energy Independent Power Producer (“IPP”) based in Paris, today announced the kick-off of the studies for the development of a large-scale green hydrogen Project called “H2 Magallanes” totalling up to 10 GW of wind installed capacity to be located near the borough of San Gregorio, in the Magallanes region, Southern Chile. The Project ties in with Chile’s ambition to feature among global leaders in the production of green hydrogen via electrolysis, with a target of 25 GW by 2030i.

Green hydrogen is expected to take a key role in the global economy in the future, as it allows to store and transport energy. By being produced with renewable energies, green hydrogen can be used in numerous fields to replace CO2-emitting fuels. In addition, it also provides a competitive response to the multiple challenges faced by renewable energy, such as dispatchability, storage and distance between the renewable resource and the main energy consumers.

With one of the best solar and wind resources in the world, Chile features among the most promising countries to develop competitive green hydrogen, either for local use or exportation to the American, Asian and European markets.

In this context, Total Eren has secured large private lands in the Magallanes region which benefits from the best onshore wind conditions in the world, as well as direct access to the sea.

The H2 Magallanes Project will consist of up to 10 GW of wind installed capacity coupled with up to 8 GW of electrolysis capacity, a desalination plant, an ammonia (NH3) plant, and port facilities to transport the green ammonia to national and international markets. The objective is to conduct studies in order to launch the project in 2025, aiming to produce hydrogen by 2027.

In the frame of the project, Total Eren signed on November 10th, 2021, a collaboration agreement with the University of Magallanes, a renowned public institution with great experience in the fields of Engineering and Environmental &
Social Studies.

This public-private partnership will be centered on 3 main pillars: Environmental & Social Studies, Education, and Research & Development.

In particular, Total Eren and the University of Magallanes will collaborate on the elaboration of the Project’s Stakeholder Engagement Plan in accordance with the best practices defined by the standards guide of the Chilean Ministry of Energy.

Besides Chile, Total Eren is working on several large-scale green hydrogen projects globally. Fabienne Demol, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Business Development of Total Eren, stated: “We are delighted to present this large-scale green hydrogen project, a pioneering initiative that we are proud to officially launch today in Chile’s Punta Arenas. We would like to thank the Ministries of Energy and Education of Chile, the University of Magallanes, our shareholder, TotalEnergies, for their continuous support and ambitious vision for the deployment of green hydrogen worldwide, as well as our teams in Chile and in France, which are key to this project’s development. I am eager to begin construction to contribute to Chile’s ambition of becoming a top destination for green hydrogen investment in Latin America and meet the needs of our customers worldwide.”
