CMG Reservoir Simulation training courses

25/01/2022

CMG is running the following online courses:

Underground Hydrogen Storage Simulation Using CMG – February 1st & 2nd 2022

  • Date: February 1 & 2, 2022
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (GMT)

With the recent increase of global demand for renewable energies, there are different aspects that need to be investigated. The seasonal fluctuations in renewable energy resources along with the seasonal consumption needs make the storage of any renewable resource energy critical. Hydrogen seems to be an appropriate carrier for storing the energy generated by renewable resources. It could potentially be stored in various types of underground reservoirs such as aquifers, depleted gas reservoirs and depleted oil reservoirs. However, every new field requires thorough investigation before any real-world applications.

This course elaborates on the outstanding capabilities of the CMG GEM software for modelling underground hydrogen storage in aquifers, depleted gas reservoirs and depleted oil reservoirs. The course contains a step-by-step procedure for modelling each of these storage processes. The attendees use WinProp to build basic PVT models for hydrogen storage. They then construct the geological and dynamic model for the process in the target reservoir using Builder. They also introduce different phenomena that are involved in the H2 storage process into the models (such as solubility, diffusivity, etc.). Finally, they investigate the effects the physics involved has on the results.

Faraj, a Senior Reservoir Simulation Engineer, has over ten years of combined industry and CMG experience working in Europe and Middle East. He brings his expertise in dynamic simulation, uncertainty assessment to CMG’s European customers. With in past few years, he also has focused on UCCS and Hydrogen storage simulations. Faraj holds a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering, both from the Amirkabir University of Technology in Iran and an MPhil in Petroleum Engineering, from Heriot-Watt University, Scotland.

CO2 Sequestration Modelling Using CMG GEM

  • Date: February 8, 2022
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00PM GMT

This course gives an overview of the modelling options built into the GEM simulator for CO2 Storage and Capture in an aquifer. A 2D model will be built and various CCS modelling tools will be progressively added on, starting from simple structural trapping down to mineralisation. The effect of each added process will be analysed in detail. The PVT package WinProp will be used for inputting the components properties and the aqueous and mineral reactions. The course will touch on the geochemical modelling features of GEM and its geomechanical modelling capabilities.

Course Content

  • Base model with structural trapping
  • Hysteresis Trapping
  • Solubility Trapping
  • Barton-Bandis Fracture Permeability Model
  • Mineral Trapping
  • Water Vaporisation
  • 3D GHG Model with Geomechanics

Marco, a Senior Reservoir Simulation Engineer, has over 10 years of industry experience working as a Reservoir Engineer throughout Europe, with a particular focus on unconventional reservoir studies. His expertise encompasses thermal recovery studies for heavy and extra heavy oil fields. He holds a Master of Science in Physics from the Universita’degli Studi dell’Insubria in Italy.
