Star speaker announced for Subsea Expo Awards 2023

Guests at the Subsea Expo Awards 2023 can look forward to a night of star gazing following the announcement of the evening’s guest speaker.

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock

Space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE, known as the BBC’s ‘face of space’ and the presenter of the astronomical institution The Sky At Night, will take to the stage at the prestigious event organised by Global Underwater Hub in February next year.

With her characteristic enthusiasm and passion for presenting science to a general audience, Maggie will share her love of science and provide invaluable insights on how science and technology affect our lives.

Dr Aderin-Pocock studied at Imperial College where she obtained her degree in Physics and her PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Since then, she has spent her career making novel, bespoke instrumentation in both the industrial and academic environments. Managing multidisciplinary teams, these instruments have ranged from handheld landmine detectors to an optical subsystem for spacecraft.

Her TV and radio appearances include regular pieces on BBC Breakfast, Doctor Who Confidential, BBC Radio 4, BBC 2: The Cosmos – A Beginner’s Guide (2007), Channel 5: Big, Bigger, Biggest Telescopes (2009) among many others. In 2009, she was awarded an MBE for services to science and science education.

The connection between space and our seas, both very challenging environments, is evident every day, and I’m sure Dr Maggie will shed further light on this with her trademark passion.

"Her career path has taken many routes including defence, science, research and education demonstrating that skills can be successfully transferred across sectors. We’re honoured that Dr Maggie has agreed to be our guest speaker at the Subsea Expo Awards 2023, which I’m sure will be a fantastic evening.”

Award winners will be announced during the evening which is being held at the P&J Live on Wednesday, 22 February 2023. Tickets are now on sale for the event via the Subsea Expo website and may be booked individually or for tables of 10.
