AFBE-UK Scotland to host career events across three Scottish cities

03/11/2022

Diversity and inclusion organisation AFBE-UK Scotland is set to hold simultaneous career events for young people at universities in Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow.

The events run from 1pm to 5pm on Wednesday, November 9 (2022) with Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, The University of Dundee and Glasgow Caledonian University taking part.

Entitled Disruptors and Ground Breakers, the seminars aim to inspire the next generation and encourage young people to pursue a career in the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) sectors.

At each event young people will gain insight from a panel of speakers who will share their career journey. This will be followed by an interactive workshop.

Dr Ann Reddipogu, an artificial intelligence (AI) expert from Aberdeen and Dr Thane Campbell of Deep Science Ventures from Glasgow will both deliver a keynote speech, while Dr Rotimi Alabi, founder and CEO of RAB-Microfluidics, will be the workshop guest.

A competition will also take place during the event where students will pitch their business idea to a series of judges in a process similar to the BBC TV programme Dragons’ Den.

Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of Aberdeen-based AFBE-UK Scotland, said:
"This is the first occasion where we are running an event across three Scottish cities simultaneously. We are looking forward to the invaluable insight that our speakers bring to the panel and hope the young people who take part find value from the topics discussed."

The Aberdeen event is face-to-face, while the Dundee and Glasgow ones are online.

AFBE-UK Scotland is part of AFBE-UK, which has recently launched its Engineering Ethnicity Index (EEI) which is a new indexing toolkit that companies can use to ensure racial inclusivity in the workplace.

AFBE-UK Scotland provides mentoring programmes to support young people with their STEAM careers. This includes its schools programme NextGen, where industry leaders and professionals give advice to pupils through entertaining events; Transition, where industry leaders help aspiring engineering professionals to enter the job market; and Real Projects, where industry professionals share their knowledge and expertise.
