Baleine - Côte d'Ivoire's Newest Oil & Gas Field

05/05/2023

In their latest video, TROVE 1st Subsurface MD Mike Cooper reviews Côte d'Ivoire's newest oil & gas field.

In 2021 Eni (with partners PetroCI) discovered the Baleine field in deepwater, offshore Côte d'Ivoire. This was followed by the Baleine East appraisal well which saw the estimated STOIIP and GIIP rise to 2.5 billion bbls and 3.3 Tcf, respectively.

In December 2022, a Final Investment Decision (FID) was reached with first production expected later this year. This fast-track development is due to go from discovery to production in under 2 years!

The first phase of production will use the ENI owned Firenze FPSO (to be renamed Baleine FPSO on arrival). Previously on the Aquila field in the Adriatic, and following a refurbishment in Dubai, the vessel is now en-route to the country.

Phase 1 is effectively an early production system and is expected to see ~30mmboe produced. Phase 2 will see over 0.5 billion boe produced.

The play is part of the same cretaceous trend as the Jubilee, Foxtrot & Espoir fields. Baleine has 2 reservoirs, in the Santonian and the Cenomanian/Albian -  both reservoir horizons are turbidite fan complex sandstones.

Baleine has analogues throughout the Tano Basin, West Africa, and indeed the entire Southern Atlantic - make sure you have access to data on all of these analogues by subscribing to TROVE databases.
