Simon Kelly awarded a prestigious second clasp for his Polar Medal

04/01/2023

CASP are delighted to relay the news that Dr Simon RA Kelly was awarded a prestigious second clasp for his Polar Medal as announced in the 2023 New Year’s Honours list. The second clasp was awarded for his outstanding achievement and service to the United Kingdom in the field of polar research.

Simon, now retired, received his original Polar Medal in 2000, for his Arctic and Antarctic research. Since the turn of the century, he has participated in an additional 14 field seasons in Greenland and the Canadian Arctic, amassing over 595 days in the field.  Simon’s research has been influential in establishing stratigraphical schemes for East Greenland.  In addition, Simon has curated CASP’s internationally significant collection of Arctic rock samples and palaeontological specimens for several decades, culminating in overseeing its relocation to a bespoke storage facility in 2020.
