Aberdeen gig to raise funds for care homes in honour of late dementia sufferers

23/06/2023

A trio of lifelong pals from the north-east will raise money for Aberdeen care homes with a gig in memory of two of their late dads.

Gary McRobb, Tommy Webster and Frank Clifton are organising a concert in aid of social care charity VSA to honour Gary and Tommy's fathers, known collectively as 'the two Tams'.

The pair died within months of each other after battles with dementia and it is hoped the gig will raise awareness of the disease.

Tommy said: "The two Tams lived such full, happy lives and to lose them both so close together has left a massive hole in all our hearts.

“We wanted to organise a commemorative event to honour our late fathers’ memories and raise money for VSA Aberdeen, while raising awareness of dementia.

"The two Tams would be delighted we are organising this event. They were a sociable pair often enjoying a pint or two together, so to be able to organise something positive in their names is very special.”

Gary's dad, who passed away in January of this year, spent his last months in the care of VSA's Ruthrieston House home.

“The staff at Ruthrieston House were absolutely fantastic during my dad’s stay there and he recognised it as his new home where he built many friendships with staff and other residents", Gary said.

"The care and support that we received particularly during his last few days was faultless."

A Ruthrieston House spokesman said: "Everyone at Ruthrieston House has been touched by the generosity of Gary and his family and we are truly grateful for their support and fundraising.

“The event Gary and his friends are arranging for the summer sounds like it will be such a great night and a real fitting way to honour Tom."

Tommy was also full of praise for Woodside Care Home, where his dad moved in August 2022.

“The care my dad received at Woodside Care Home was second to none and he was looked after by the staff as one of their own in their small ‘family’ unit,” Tommy said.

“I can’t thank the staff enough for their care in those last few days.”

The concert, named 'Rock Against Dementia: The Two Tams Smash Dementia', will be held on Saturday, July 1 at the city's OGV Podium on Windmill Brae.

Among the acts who will take to the stage are Connor Clark and The Matador Kings, Sibling Sons and McMontage. Eric Doyle will be the host on the night.

Ann McRobb Associates, Steinish Marine, Cameron’s Planning Solutions and Wellvene are backing the event. Tickets cost £10 and can be bought here.

Gary added: “We hope the event will be a huge success and will raise some much-needed funds. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported our efforts so far.

"We have been overwhelmed with the generosity of our sponsors, family and friends, who have rallied to help ensure this very special evening goes smoothly.”
