03/01/2024

In their latest video, 1st Subsurface, TROVE explore the historic significance of Drake's Well, the birthplace of the modern oil and gas industry. Mike Cooper tells the story behind Colonel Edwin Drake's groundbreaking discovery that saw a technological development used in every oil & gas well today.

Discover the challenges Edwin Drake faced and the pioneering innovation he employed.

Drake's 1859 discovery was not the world's first oil well, but it marked a pivotal moment in the industry's history. While the well, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, did not produce vast quantities of oil, it is still remembered today for the pioneering use of casing (or conductor) to secure the wellbore. It is considered as the catalyst for the modern oil & gas industry, igniting the imagination of geologists and prospectors throughout North America and beyond.
