Kyon Secures Approval For 100-MW Battery Storage Site in Germany

11/03/2024

  • New large-scale battery storage project in Dahlem, NRW approved
  • Project brings 100 MW storage capacity and 200 MWh storage capacity for the German power grid
  • Realization planned by the end of 2026

Kyon Energy is continuing the expansion of storage capacities in Germany. The Munich-based project development company for large-scale battery storage systems has received approval for another storage project, this time in North Rhine-Westphalia. The planned storage facility will be built in Dahlem and will have a storage capacity of 100 megawatts and a storage capacity of at least 200 megawatt hours. In the past four months, Kyon Energy has already announced the realization of new storage projects with a total of 237.5 MW / 507 MWh in Germany. Construction of the new facility in Dahlem is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with commissioning to follow by the end of 2026. With this project, Kyon Energy is setting another milestone to strengthen the energy storage infrastructure in Germany.

For Dahlem's mayor Jan Lembach, the battery storage system is a further element in the long-term supply of renewable energy alongside the 21 existing wind turbines: "We are setting standards in the region and NRW and have already more than fulfilled our mission as a small municipality in the energy transition," he says.

"Large battery storage systems are key players in the transformation of our energy infrastructure. They massively expand the potential for sustainable energy generation and are crucial for grid stability and accelerating the energy transition," says Florian Antwerpen, one of the Managing Directors of Kyon Energy.

Battery storage systems are an essential part of the energy transition - they take surplus energy from the electricity grid and feed it back into the system as required. Once completed, the storage system in Dahlem will also make a decisive contribution to stabilizing and increasing the flexibility of the local electricity grid and promote the feed-in of electricity from renewable energies.
