PETEX 2018 Spotlight Speaker: Julian Bessa, Echo Energy

12/11/2018

With just 2 weeks to go until PETEX 2018, we are delighted to introduce you to our final spotlight speaker for PETEX 2018.

This week we are speaking to Julian Bessa from Echo Energy who is speaking in Hall 2 on Wednesday at PETEX regarding Opening up New Plays in the Austral Basin, Southern Argentina. We spoke to Julian about his presentation, why Echo Energy are exploring Southern Argentina and what audiences can expect from his presentation at PETEX.

Why Southern Argentina?

Southern Argentina offers opportunities across several hydrocarbon provinces for which the first exploration discovery was back in 1949. The Austral Basin in particular has a variety of play types, is the second largest gas producing basin in Argentina (in terms of reserves) has well developed infrastructure to deliver gas to markets to the central part of the country. With the excitement of Neuquen, the Austral basin has remained overlooked by foreign companies. For small companies this provides a range of low cost onshore E&P opportunities and many high-quality local companies to partner with.

What expertise do companies such as Echo Energy offer in frontier regions such as Argentina?

Traditionally activity in the basin has been empirical. What Echo Energy brings to the Austral Basin, is the ability to move rapidly, overseas validation of local companies, additional sources of capital and technical challenge with due respect to local norms.

What insights can the PETEX 2018 audience hope to gain at the conference presentation?

I hope that attendees will gain an insight into how a minow E&P company has built an exploration-led portfolio in southern Argentina over a very short period and some of the key factors to considerer in doing so.
