Vattenfall and Zephyr Vind Secure Approval For Offshore Wind Farm in Sweden

14/11/2024

Zephyr and Vattenfall have secured a government permit for the Poseidon offshore wind power project in Sweden.

The Poseidon wind farm, which is planned in the southern Skagerrak – about 40 kilometers northwest of Gothenburg, is strategically important to ensure more energy production for electricity price range 3. The project is intended to be built on a floating foundation, which means that Poseidon could become Sweden's first floating wind farm.

With up to 81 planned turbines, the plant has the ability to produce 5.5 TWh annually, which corresponds to the electricity consumption of around 1 million households. This additional large-scale electricity production is extremely important for the green conversion of industry in western Sweden, where fossil energy sources are replaced with green electricity.

The Poseidon wind farm is being developed by the company KonTiki Vind AB, which is a collaboration between Zephyr AS and Vattenfall Vindkraft AB, where Vattenfall is the majority owner.

Poseidon floating wind farm

The area for the planned wind farm is located in the southern part of the Skagerrak, within the Swedish economic zone outside the territorial border, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Gothenburg.

Västra Götaland is facing a comprehensive green transformation and electrification in the industrial and transport sectors. The need for electricity in the county is expected to almost double by 2030 and triple by 2045. The Poseidon wind farm has the potential to contribute a large increase in renewable energy by producing approximately 5.5 TWh of electricity, which corresponds to the electricity consumption of approximately 1 million households (5,500 kWh per household and year).

The wind farm is planned on an area of 152 square kilometers which will consist of a maximum of 81 wind turbines with a total height of 260-340 meters. In the area there are large bottom depths and for that reason wind turbines are planned on floating foundations within the entire project area. By placing the works further out to sea, disturbances to people living on the coastal strip are less noticeable than if they are placed on shallow, land-based bottoms. The floating foundations are also considered to have a lower impact on, for example, benthic fauna and marine mammals. Wind farm Poseidon has the potential to become Sweden's first wind farm with a floating foundation.

Zephyr started the project in 2021. Since 2022, the project has been run jointly by Zephyr and Vattenfall in the jointly owned company KonTiki Vind AB , where Vattenfall is the majority owner.

The government granted permission for the construction and operation of the wind farm in November 2024.
