Petrobras and Ecopetrol Confirm Colombia’s Largest Gas Discovery

06/12/2024

Petrobras and Ecopetrol confirm the largest gas discovery in Colombia's history with the drilling of the Sirius-2 well

Petrobras, through Petrobras International Braspetro BV – Colombia Branch (PIB-COL), and Ecopetrol confirm the largest gas discovery in Colombia's history with the drilling of the Sirius-2 well.

The Sirius-2 well began drilling on June 19, 2024 and is located within the area of the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, 77 kilometers from Santa Marta (capital of the department of Magdalena, in the north of the country), in a water depth of 830 meters.

With the evaluation of the results of the Sirius-2 well, gas volumes in excess of 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in place (VGIP) were confirmed. This finding could increase Colombia's current reserves by 200%.

Thanks to this result, the consortium formed by PIB-COL, as operator (44.44% stake), and Ecopetrol (55.56% stake), will begin activities to acquire meta-oceanic data, as part of the Production Development Project for the discovery. This data, together with environmental information on the seabed, bathymetry, geotechnical and geophysical information, are essential for the installation of the pipeline to transport natural gas from the field to the gas treatment unit onshore, as well as for the installation of production systems on the seabed.

The consortium estimates investing US$1.2 billion in the exploratory phase and US$2.9 billion in the production development phase. The investments from PIB-COL's share are included in Petrobras' 2025-2029 Business Plan. The expectation is to begin natural gas production within three years after receiving all environmental licenses and if the commercial viability of the discovery is confirmed, expected by 2027. The expected production, through four producing wells in an innovative “subsea to shore” design , is approximately 13 million m³/day for 10 years.

With this discovery of great volumetric potential for natural gas, the necessary socio-environmental and licensing procedures will be initiated to transport the gas to consumption centers.

Petrobras reinforces its commitment to its activities in Colombia, working safely, respecting life, people and the environment, recognizing the importance of dialogue with local communities and in compliance with the country's legal requirements.
