Sovcomflot (SCF Group) has received a prestigious Environment Award – Individual Company at the 2018 Lloyd’s List Global Awards. The award ceremony was held in London on 11 December 2018.
Industry experts commended Sovcomflot for its pioneering drive to adopt cleaner-burning Marine LNG fuel as a primary fuel for large-capacity oil tankers. Using LNG fuel enables sulphur oxides and particulate emissions to be reduced by 100 per cent, nitrogen oxides emissions to be lowered by 76 per cent, and carbon dioxide emissions to be cut by 27 per cent, when compared with tankers using standard marine diesel oil.
In 2018 Sovcomflot saw the first three LNG-fueled Aframax tankers delivered to its fleet, with five more such vessels under construction. This series comprises the world’s first Aframax tankers purpose-designed to use LNG as their primary fuel.
Igor Tonkovidov, Executive Vice President, COO & CTO of Sovcomflot, commented:
“We are grateful to judges of the Lloyd’s List Global Awards for their recognition of the success and impact of our pioneering Green Funnel initiative, to introduce LNG as a cleaner fuel for large tankers. We believe this initiative is part of a wider transformation underway in the global shipping industry, to improve sustainability and efficiency through the introduction of innovative technologies and higher environmental standards. Receiving this prestigious Environment Award, as part of the 2018 Lloyd’s List Global Awards, acknowledges a landmark event for Sovcomflot and is a valued endorsement of the part our company is playing in this industry transformation.”
