As the world shifts its attention to new energy frontiers, few countries are drawing as much excitement as Namibia. With major offshore oil and gas discoveries, a stable political environment and a firm commitment to local content development, Namibia is poised to become a continental energy powerhouse. That’s the central message behind the 3rd Namibia Oil and Gas Conference (NOGC 2025), scheduled for August 12–15 in Windhoek—a key milestone in the country’s journey from exploration to real industrial action.
This year’s event includes an expanded exhibition space, an additional technical conference and dedicated business matchmaking sessions, creating a convergence of opportunity, expertise and ambition. And one exciting speaker that will be lending his voice to the future of Namibia’s energy sector is prominent industry expert, Dr. Osa Igiehon, CEO of Heirs Energies.
Well known for driving the operational turnaround at Heirs Energies, he shared some key strategies for better cost-efficiency and innovation in emerging markets.
“At Heirs Energies, we believe operational excellence paired with disciplined innovation is key to cost-efficient growth in emerging markets. When we acquired OML 17 (Nigerian oilfield), we applied our homegrown and proprietary Brownfield Excellence methodology, rapidly doubling production while reducing costs and environmental impact. We achieved this through rigorous technical evaluation, targeted well interventions, and using tested and novel technologies innovatively."
According to Dr Igiehon, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, and empowering teams to challenge norms and drive efficiencies while upholding safety and environmental standards is vital.
His third point included prioritising stakeholder collaboration as working closely with host communities, local suppliers, and regulators to address challenges such as crude theft and environmental risks, ensures stability and shared value.
Dr Igiehon added,
“This approach reflects our commitment to Africapitalism - leveraging private sector solutions to drive economic prosperity and social wealth. By aligning operational performance with local development, we strengthen resilience while advancing Africa’s energy security.”
He delved into the importance of integrating the oil and gas value chain with local industry, "Local partnerships are essential for sustainable operations and shared prosperity in Africa’s energy sector. We’ve seen firsthand how working with local businesses, suppliers, and communities drives operational resilience while creating economic value. Today, over 95% of our contractors are local businesses, reflecting our commitment to building indigenous capacity and ensuring the benefits of our operations directly reach host communities.”
He explained that by engaging communities as active partners in the energy value chain, you’re prioritising local talent, fostering skills transfers and ensuring your supply chains stimulate local economies.
Dr Igiehorn also touched on Africa’s energy sustainability,
“The single most crucial factor for Africa’s long-term energy sustainability is achieving energy sufficiency while pursuing a practical, Africa-specific transition. Africa needs reliable, affordable energy to industrialise, create jobs and grow its economies. Without this, sustainability becomes theoretical. The continent must responsibly leverage its hydrocarbon resources, particularly natural gas, whilst investing in cleaner technologies that reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency. But sustainability must go beyond environmental considerations alone. It includes creating local value, building skills, and strengthening communities. An energy system that delivers reliable power while empowering local industries and people will truly drive sustainable development.”
