Iberdrola wind farm and photovoltaic plant
- Iberdrola España has been supplying energy to Mercadona's supermarkets and logistics centres for over twenty years
- The companies strengthen their collaboration through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) to support the decarbonisation of the economy
- This agreement positions both companies among the leaders in the European PPA market for 2025
Iberdrola España, Iberdrola's subsidiary in the country, and Mercadona have expanded their alliance with the signing of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for more than 300 MW, associated with wind and solar assets, for the supermarket chain's logistics centres and supermarkets.
Both companies have been working for years to advance the electrification of their services. In fact, Iberdrola is responsible for the supply, commissioning and operation of up to 3,500 charging points in 800 supermarkets in Spain and Portugal. The addition of these new charging points for electric vehicles represents a significant step forward in the expansion of the public charging network.
Iberdrola has extensive experience in PPAs. The company manages power purchase agreements in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Australia for onshore and offshore wind and photovoltaic projects. Europe's leading electricity company by market capitalisation and the world's second largest, it has been offering innovative PPA proposals for more than a decade.
Iberdrola has announced agreements with major companies such as Amazon, with which it has signed wind and photovoltaic PPAs in Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom for the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm. It has also signed agreements with other global customers such as Google, Bayer, BP, Telefónica and Salzgitter, as well as local customers.
David Martinez, Director of Customers Spain at Iberdrola España, stated:
"Iberdrola España has been working for years, increasing its collaborations to boost electrification as the most efficient solution for businesses. Collaborations like this one with Mercadona are essential to support the continuous development of a renewable electricity mix. The PPA is the ideal tool for customers who want to electrify, as it ensures they consume renewable energy at a stable, long-term price."
According to Adolfo Ortiz, Director of Energy at Mercadona:
"With this agreement, we are advancing in our strategy to ensure an energy supply at a stable and competitive price, minimising the effects of the volatility in the electricity market on our budget. In addition, we reinforce our commitment by once again supporting renewable energy sources that are environmentally friendly."
