HELMS Completes Major Offshore Soil Investigation For PETRONAS

12/08/2025

Helms Geomarine has successfully completed a series of offshore geotechnical campaigns for Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd (PETRONAS) off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Known collectively as the BIGST Cluster—Bujang, Inas, Guling, Sepat and Tujoh—these fields are one of Malaysia’s most significant new gas developments, aimed at unlocking an estimated 4 trillion cubic feet of high-CO₂ gas reserves, a cornerstone in PETRONAS’ strategy to enhance domestic gas supply while integrating Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) solutions to support Malaysia’s low-carbon transition.

The projects required deep boreholes drilling with alternating sampling and CPT, providing critical soil data for pile foundation design and installation analysis. This work forms part of the early infrastructure phase for the development of the BIGST fields.

Being one of the largest development-focused undertakings this year, the campaigns fully engaged HELMS’ in-house Soil Testing Laboratory and Engineering resources, showcasing the capacity and efficiency of its integrated offshore-to-lab workflow.

Looking ahead, HELMS' flagship DP2 vessel, the Keyfield Helms 1, is currently being remobilized for upcoming exploration campaigns in offshore Terengganu and Sarawak in the months ahead.
