Project Database: Sanquhar II Wind Farm

21/08/2025

Sanquhar II Wind Farm, a 44-turbine wind farm in Southern Scotland, will generate 308MW, making it the fourth-largest wind farm in the UK. Planning consent was granted on 31 August 2023. The project consists of 42 turbines at 200m to tip and 2 turbines at 149m. The project also includes an energy storage facility for improved grid stability. Construction began in 2025 and updates will be posted on this website.

Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm is located in Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, 6.5km southwest of Sanquhar and 14km north west of Thornhill.

WIND FARM PROPOSAL

The Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm includes access tracks for equipment transport, a main substation and satellite substation for power distribution, and temporary borrow pits for construction materials. Temporary construction and storage compounds will store equipment, while crane hardstands will support turbine assembly and maintenance.

BATTERY STORAGE

The battery storage facility at Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm will store excess energy generated by the turbines, releasing it when demand is higher or wind conditions are lower. This will improve grid stability, maximise efficiency, and provide a more reliable energy supply, supporting the transition to cleaner, sustainable energy.
