Cragganmore - The Largest Undeveloped Gas Accumulation in North West Europe

12/09/2025

In the latest video from 1st Subsurface TROVE, Mike Cooper and Colin Percival talk about the UK's largest undeveloped gas discovery, Cragganmore, West of the Shetland Isles. The gas accumulation is proven by two wells drilled into the Palaeocene "Vaila Sandstone". The appraisal well was tested and flowed up to 6mmscfgd of sweet gas. Cragganmore has 700 Bcf gas resources - they only become reserves once a project is sanctioned and moved forward for production. Further, the Sullom Voe Gas Plant on the Shetland Isles has significant ullage (that's "spare capacity) now and into the future. It is a natural home for new gas streams coming from accumulations like Cragganmore and the many other undrilled prospects in the region.

UK Energy demand still relies on Oil and Gas and these are currently forecast to be from carbon intensive imports. Domestic electrified production would meet much of this demand and produce less emissions, while providing jobs in the UK.
