Project Database: Poseidon and Orion

14/09/2025

Carbon Catalyst is a Pure-Play Carbon Capture & Storage Project Developer dedicated to delivering innovative Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) solutions for large-scale decarbonisation. Founded in 2020, the company are developing a high-quality portfolio of carbon transport and storage projects across the North Sea, including Poseidon and Orion. Notably, Poseidon is the site of the UK’s first offshore CO₂ injection test, with operations currently underway.

Poseidon

The Poseidon Project is a large-scale Carbon Capture & Storage initiative in the UK’s Southern North Sea, set to begin CO₂ sequestration at 1.5 Mtpa in 2029 and scale up to 40 Mtpa, supporting the decarbonisation of key UK regions and major industrial hubs across Continental Europe.

Strategic Storage in the Leman Gas Field

Poseidon will utilise the legacy Leman gas field, the largest reservoir complex on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), which offers a combination of depleted gas reservoirs and saline aquifers for permanent CO₂ storage. With an estimated capacity of ~1000 Mt (including the BC9 aquifer and depleted reservoirs), Poseidon is positioned to become one of Europe’s most significant CCS projects.

Phased Development for Scalable Growth

Poseidon will be developed in phases, gradually increasing its injection capacity to meet growing demand:

  • 2029 – Initial CO₂ injection of ~1.5 Mtpa
  • 2034 – Scaling up to ~10 Mtpa
  • Long-term – Peaking at ~40 Mtpa over a 40-year period

This scalable approach makes Poseidon a critical enabler of both UK and European decarbonisation efforts.

Leveraging Existing Infrastructure & Expertise

As one of the UK’s largest gas asset operators, Perenco is uniquely positioned to repurpose existing offshore and onshore infrastructure to deliver a world-class CCS operation. By leveraging its extensive expertise and working collaboratively with key stakeholders, Poseidon is on track for efficient, on-time and on-budget delivery.

Pioneering the UK’s First Offshore CO₂ Injection Test

Poseidon is now advancing into a detailed appraisal phase, refining storage site assessments and finalising the technical concept for full-scale deployment. This has included the successful execution of the UK’s first offshore CO₂ injection test in early 2025, marking a significant milestone in the development of carbon storage technology.

A Key Hub for Future CO₂ Storage Expansion

Poseidon is not only one of the largest CO₂ storage site in the UK but is also strategically located closest to London and European CO₂ emissions sources. Once established, it will naturally serve as a hub for future CO₂ storage expansion in the Southern North Sea.

Orion

Expanding the UK’s Carbon Capture & Storage Capacity

The Orion Project is a strategic Carbon Capture & Storage initiative in the UK’s Southern North Sea, set to begin CO₂ sequestration at 1-2 Mtpa in 2031 and scale up to 6 Mtpa, playing a key role in decarbonising Humberside and surrounding industrial regions.

Expanding the UK’s Carbon Capture & Storage Capacity

Orion will utilise depleted gas reservoirs in the decommissioned Amethyst field and the currently producing West Sole field for the permanent geological storage of captured CO₂. These reservoirs offer secure and scalable storage capacity, supporting regional industrial decarbonisation for at least 30 years.

Strategic Storage in Depleted Gas Fields

Orion is designed to complement other CCS projects by increasing UK storage capacity and ensuring a diverse, resilient CO₂ sequestration network. The project’s phased approach enables measured, scalable growth:

  • 2031 – Initial CO₂ injection: ~1-2 Mtpa
  • Long-term – Expanding to 6 Mtpa over a 30-year operational period

By repurposing key existing assets, including strategic pipelines and offshore facilities, Orion ensures an efficient and cost-effective CCS solution.

Advancing Towards Deployment

Orion is now in a detailed appraisal phase with our partner, Perenco. We are actively refining storage site assessments and optimising infrastructure reuse to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.
