CASP Launches New Report

04/11/2025

CASP announces the release of their latest report: “Cyclostratigraphy of the Lower Triassic, Southern North Sea Basin: implications for the Bunter Sandstone CO2 Storage Complex”

This comprehensive report presents a high-resolution cyclostratigraphic framework that integrates spectral analysis with core sedimentology and XRF geochemistry to improve regional subsurface correlation, supporting stratigraphic de-risking for geological carbon storage (GCS) and reservoir appraisal.

Highlights:

  • Applied spectral analysis to gamma-ray logs from 20 wells, confirming long- and short-eccentricity (c. 405 kyr, c. 100 kyr) cycles and documenting their sedimentological expression and distribution.
  • Integrated core observations and XRF to establish a basin-wide, high-resolution framework for correlation and prediction of reservoir architecture and compartmentalisation.

Why it matters:

  • Recognition of orbitally paced controls on sedimentation provides a powerful basis for understanding reservoir architecture.
  • Prediction of high- and low-permeability intervals supports management of CO₂ injectivity, plume migration, containment, pressure management and compartmentalisation.
  • Cycle-calibrated framework improves regional correlations and reduces stratigraphic uncertainty.

Deliverables:

  • Fully illustrated physical and electronic report (167 pages), including a detailed well-correlation panel, well-by-well spectral analysis and summary tables.
  • Supplementary package: StrataBugs project for correlation (with band-pass–filtered long- and short-eccentricity curves and surface/cycle picks), XRF dataset (1,498 measurements from four wells) and a GIS project of well locations.

This report is an excellent resource for geoscientists, regulatory bodies and industry professionals involved in CO2 storage in the Southern North Sea Basin and adjacent areas.

The report’s authors are Niall W. Paterson, Rebecca Ostler, Michelle Shiers, Michael Pointon, Simon Schneider, Benoit Vautravers
and Stephen Vincent.
