- The agreement allows Dana Gas to evaluate a number of existing gas fields belonging to the Syrian Petroleum Company, making it the first gas project developer to sign such an agreement with the government.
- The goal is to support the government's ambitions to significantly boost domestic gas production, thereby supporting electricity generation capacity and contributing to the revitalization of the Syrian energy sector.
- Dana Gas has proven its competence in executing vital projects thanks to its possession of the required capabilities, which was recently demonstrated by its successful completion of the Khor Mor 250 expansion project in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
- The agreement includes the Abu Rabah gas field, which is one of the largest gas discoveries in Syria.
Dana Gas, the largest private natural gas company in the Middle East, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPSC) to explore the potential for redeveloping and expanding several natural gas fields located in central Syria. These fields include the Abu Rabah gas field, one of the largest gas fields discovered in Syria, along with several other fields belonging to SPSC.
Dana Gas is the first gas project developer to sign such an agreement. Under the terms of the MoU, the Company will conduct a comprehensive technical assessment of the identified fields, leading to a proposed integrated development plan. This plan aims to increase the total gas production from these fields, subject to the success of the assessment and the agreement reached by both parties to implement the project.
Richard Hall, CEO of Dana Gas, said:
“This agreement represents an important first step towards assessing opportunities for redeveloping the gas infrastructure in Syria and exploring its potential. The fields identified under this memorandum are capable of making a real difference in domestic gas production, which enhances energy security in Syria and supports local communities in various parts of the country.”
He added:
“Despite the numerous challenges, our confidence in this step stems from two key factors: firstly, the high level of professionalism and strong technical capabilities we have witnessed within the Syrian Petroleum Company team, and secondly, our established experience in development and operations, recently demonstrated by our ahead-of-scheduled completion of the Khor Mor 250 expansion project in Iraq, in collaboration with our operating partner. We believe that the lessons learned and the capabilities we gained from that project can be directly applied to projects of this nature. These projects require direct, hands-on implementation, strict adherence to technical and financial controls, and a deep understanding of the region's characteristics—all essential factors for ensuring successful execution. We thank our Syrian partners for the trust they have placed in us and for this valuable partnership, and together we look forward to achieving our shared goals.”
