Sonnedix Strengthens Its Leadership in Italy

17/12/2025

Sonnedix, a global renewable energy company with 12GW of total capacity, has secured contracts totalling 805MW of solar capacity in Italy through the FER-X auction, its NZIA-aligned scheme, and the Energy Release mechanism.

The awards significantly build on Sonnedix’s development pipeline in the country, reinforcing the company’s ability to deliver 100% clean electricity to industrial customers through its diversified portfolio.

Sonnedix was awarded 670MW across nine solar sites in the country’s FER-X auction, managed by the Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE). In addition, the Company has secured 125MW in the country’s Energy Release mechanism and a further 10MW under Italy’s NZIA-compliant auction (part of the transitional FER-X Transitorio programme), which includes non-price criteria to incentivise the use of European-made components. In the Energy Release framework, the company is in negotiation for further capacity of over 100MW, bringing the potential awards from the three schemes to 910MW.

Sonnedix is one of the most active solar developers in Italy, having recently achieved 900MW of operating capacity in the country, where it continues to focus on hybridisation of its existing portfolio such as a recently announced co-located 18MW/4H Battery and Energy Storage System (BESS) project, currently under construction in Sicily.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, said:
“Securing over 800MW across three competitive schemes is an excellent result, which is a testament to our strength and track record in the Italian market. These new projects—coupled with the ongoing hybridisation of our portfolio and the addition of new technologies—greatly enhance our ability to meet our customers’ needs, giving us greater agility in providing flexible, tailored solutions to support their decarbonisation journey.”

Mario Volpe, Regional Head of Growth and Representative Director, Italy, added:

“These results reflect the technical quality of our portfolio and the maturity of our team in Italy, as well as our commitment to advancing the country’s energy transition. Many awarded projects are already under construction or will start soon, strengthening our footprint in key regions. We continue to work closely with local stakeholders and authorities to drive sustainable growth.”

The nine projects for which Sonnedix was awarded contracts in the FER-X are distributed as follows:

  • Sicily - 495.7MW
  • Lazio - 157MW
  • Emilia-Romagna - 17.7MW

The region for which Sonnedix was awarded projects under the NZIA-compliant FER-X auction is Basilicata (10MW).
