Energiequelle Commissions Teschendorf Wind Farm

Teschendorf wind farm

Energiequelle GmbH has successfully commissioned a new wind farm in Teschendorf, Germany. The project, planned and built in the Gifhorn district, comprises five state-of-the-art Enercon E 138 turbines. With a hub height of 131 meters and a capacity of 4.2 megawatts each, the turbines will generate approximately 60 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. This is enough to supply around 17,000 households with CO₂-free electricity – a significant contribution to the energy transition in Lower Saxony.

The path to realization was long: Regional planning alone took ten years, followed by a two-year zoning approval process. Construction finally began in June 2024 after a total of twelve years of planning. The construction phase proceeded smoothly, and all turbines were connected to the grid as planned in October 2025.

The wind farm not only contributes to a sustainable energy supply but also strengthens the local community. The town of Wittingen and the surrounding villages will receive a total of approximately three million euros.

This is based on Section 6 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), which allows project development companies to pay 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour generated to the municipalities. For Wittingen, this translates to annual revenue of around 120,000 euros. In addition, the Energiequelle Foundation is providing 300,000 euros for charitable purposes – the equivalent of 15,000 euros per year. Over a 20-year period, the town of Wittingen and its districts of Teschendorf, Küstorf, Schneflingen, and Mahnburg will thus receive approximately 2.7 million euros.

Furthermore, residents of these districts can participate directly: After successful registration, they will receive an electricity bonus of 200 euros per household per year, fixed for ten years. With approximately 180 households participating, this amounts to an additional 360,000 euros.

For project manager Tina Hermerding, financial participation is a crucial key to the successful implementation of wind energy projects:
“To create acceptance for renewable energy projects, it is important to involve the people and the community financially. Through the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the Energiequelle Foundation, and the electricity bonus, we have created legally sound ways to do this.”

The Teschendorf wind farm exemplifies how acceptance efforts can succeed: In addition to a transparent information policy, the financial participation of local residents is a key instrument for shaping the energy transition together.
