Congo LNG: A Key Project in Eni's Gas Strategy

12/02/2026

On 7 February, an official ceremony was held, attended by the President of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, and Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi, to celebrate the first cargo from the Nguya FLNG floating plant.

The project is a key element in establishing a leadership position within the LNG market. It marks a further step towards the target of growing the LNG portfolio to 20 million tonnes per annum by 2030, a goal that leverages flexibility, competitiveness and geographical diversification.Watch the video

Project milestones

The Congo LNG project was structured in two phases, developed by leveraging a wide range of technological and operational expertise. Phase 1, launched with the Tango FLNG floating unit, achieved start-up in December 2023, just over a year after the project was finalised. Thanks to the first cargo of liquefied natural gas produced by Tango FLNG, which departed in February 2024, the Republic of the Congo joined the global list of LNG-producing countries.

In December 2025, with the arrival of the Nguya FLNG floating liquefaction plant, Eni announced the launch of Phase 2 and the introduction of gas into the new offshore infrastructure system in Congo. The start-up of Phase 2 comes just 35 months after construction began on the Nguya FLNG unit, setting a new international industry standard in terms of execution speed and efficiency. Measuring 376 metres in length and 60 metres in width, Nguya FLNG uses advanced technologies to reduce its carbon footprint and is designed to process gas of varying compositions, a feature intended to support the potential development of other fields in the area.

Diversifying supply sources

Congo LNG is part of a broader supply diversification plan, where Congolese liquefied natural gas contributes to energy security while simultaneously generating tangible benefits for the local economy.

Eni’s presence in Congo

Eni has been present in the Republic of the Congo since 1968 and is at the forefront of developing the country’s vast gas resources. Since 2010, the company has supplied natural gas to the Centrale Éléctrique du Congo (CEC), the main power generation plant, which provides 70% of the country’s electricity generation capacity. Eni is also involved in numerous initiatives to improve local communities' access to energy, water and healthcare, as well as fostering economic diversification.

The role of gas in the transition

Natural gas plays a significant role in the energy transition process due to its accessibility, reliability, versatility and lower carbon footprint compared to other fossil fuels. Another decisive characteristic is its complementarity with other technological and energy solutions, such as renewable sources, which are set to become increasingly important for meeting the growing global energy demand.
