Lightsource bp has been awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) for Hett Moor Solar Farm in the UK Government’s latest renewables auction, AR7. Securing this contract means Lightsource bp will deliver stable, low-cost, home-grown renewable energy to the national grid under a long-term, government-backed contract.
This year’s auction saw record participation from the solar sector, with 50% more solar farms gaining support compared with the previous round. Solar Energy UK estimates that the successful projects will contribute around £370m in gross value added to the UK economy.
The CfD scheme is the Government’s main support scheme for low carbon power. It guarantees a stable price for electricity generated, protect consumers from price spikes, gives developers long-term certainty and helps accelerate the rollout of affordable low-carbon energy.
Hett Moor Solar Farm, in County Durham, is designed to deliver renewable energy benefits while fitting sensitively into the landscape. Once operational, the project will generate enough low-carbon energy to power over 16,000 homes.
Our plans were shaped by extensive environmental assessments and evolved in direct response to community feedback during the initial application phase. To enhance biodiversity, the project also includes new habitats, native planting and long-term land management measures.
Ben Fawcett, Head of Business Development for UK at Lightsource bp, said:
“We are delighted that Hett Moor Solar Farm has been awarded a contract through the Government’s latest Contracts for Difference auction. This project represents more than delivering affordable, low-carbon energy, it reflects our commitment to listening carefully and working collaboratively with local communities. Incorporating their insights and concerns into our plans, ensures that Hett Moor Solar Farm benefits local economies, supports biodiversity, and respects the environment. As we continue to grow our solar and energy storage portfolio across the UK, we remain committed to building strong community partnerships that are essential for a sustainable and inclusive energy future.”
