Ayre Offshore Wind Farm – one of the UK’s flagship offshore wind projects – has reached a major milestone after gaining planning consent for its onshore infrastructure.
The Highland Council has granted planning permission for the onshore works, enabling the 1 GW project to continue progressing towards construction.
Located to the east of Orkney and north-east of Caithness, Ayre is being developed by global renewable energy company Qair.

Ewan Walker, Ayre Offshore Wind Farm Project Director said:
“This is an important development for the Ayre project. The onshore planning consent moves us a significant step closer to delivering clean energy at scale from the north of Scotland, while also contributing to UK government targets.
“The project is expected to create opportunities for local supply chains and skilled jobs across the region during both construction and long-term operations. We remain committed to working closely with local communities, stakeholders and supply chain partners to deliver this project.”
Consultation on the offshore application for Ayre Offshore Wind Farm, which was submitted to the Marine Directorate, recently concluded. Subject to consent, the project is expected to be operational in the early 2030s.
Developed by Qair, Ayre will generate enough clean electricity to power over 1.2 million homes and create significant opportunities for local supply chains and skilled jobs.
Qair, which is also constructing the Eolmed floating offshore wind farm in France, brings proven expertise to Ayre, supporting Scotland’s ambitions for sustainable energy.
