Great British Energy (GBE) has announced that founding chair Juergen Maier will step down from the organisation in October after completing his term.
The company said the move marks a “natural milestone” as the publicly owned energy company transitions from its start-up phase into a more established organisation.
In a message to stakeholders, GBE said:
“After completing his term in October, Juergen Maier will be stepping down from his role as Start-Up Chair of Great British Energy. This marks a natural milestone in GBE’s evolution as we move from our start-up phase into becoming a fully established organisation, firmly positioned for the next phase of growth.”
Maier was appointed as the inaugural chair of Great British Energy in 2024, tasked with helping establish the new state-owned clean energy company, which is headquartered in Aberdeen.
The organisation said his leadership had played a key role in shaping its direction and establishing its foundations.
The message continued:
“From the outset, Juergen’s stewardship has been central to building GBE’s foundations. His leadership has shaped our vision and helped establish the momentum that defines the organisation today. On behalf of the whole team, we want to express our sincere gratitude for the commitment and experience he has brought throughout this formative period.”
GBE confirmed that preparations are now under way for a leadership transition, with recruitment for a new chair expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The company said it would undertake a structured handover process to ensure continuity and minimise disruption to its work programme.
