A new independent report highlights how Cornish Lithium is set to unlock £5bn for the UK economy, create further jobs in Cornwall, and secure a domestic lithium supply for the UK.
This Public First report, commissioned by Cornish Lithium, quantifies the strategic importance and potential economic contribution of the company over the next 25 years.
Key Findings
- Cornish Lithium is projected to contribute over £5.0 billion to the UK economy and £3.8 billion to Cornwall over the next 25 years.
- The company is expected to support over 1,000 jobs annually across the UK, including over 700 jobs per year within Cornwall.
- The projects will deliver above-average economic benefits to the local and national economy compared to similar industrial activities with every £1 of direct value added estimated to generate around £1.41 in total economic activity (compared to an average £1.08 for mining, £1.14 for construction or £1.21 for scientific and research activities).
- The direct jobs are very high-quality, with 98% of roles paying above the Cornish median salary and 71% paying above the 70th percentile - meaning workers would be in the top third of the income distribution in Cornwall.
- Around 80% of jobs created are suitable for non-graduates, helping to rebalance the local economy toward high-wage, secure employment.
- Cornish Lithium’s production could contribute nearly 40% (38% projected) of the UK’s domestic lithium extraction target by 2035, substantially strengthening national supply chain resilience and reducing reliance on imports.
- Projected output from Trelavour is sufficient to support the production of approximately 360,000 electric vehicles per year and in total Cornish Lithium could support the annual production of up to 760,000 EVs per annum in the UK.
- Operations are projected to be significantly less carbon-intensive than current global benchmarks, with the Trelavour site being approximately 30% less carbon-intensive than comparable Chinese extraction processes.
- Lithium in Geothermal Waters sites could provide low-carbon heating for up to 29,000 households in Cornwall, offering carbon savings benefits valued at £2.5 million per year using UK government standard carbon values.
- A decade-long collaboration with the Camborne School of Mines and a bespoke Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship program are actively nurturing local talent pipelines.
- A formal Benefit Sharing Policy includes the Cornish Lithium Community Fund and proposed long-term funds, supporting local skills, community facilities, and industrial heritage.
