RP Global Secures Financing For 124 MW Wałcz Wind Farm in Poland

29/06/2026

Poland is rapidly positioning itself as one of Europe’s most dynamic emerging clean energy hubs, a status reinforced by a major new financial milestone in its onshore wind sector. Austrian developer RP Global has successfully finalised a €174 million (approximately $198.6 million) financing package to construct the 124 MW Wałcz wind project in northwestern Poland.

This agreement, achieved in close collaboration with Eiffel Investment Group and Banco Santander, represents a landmark financial achievement for the country, signaling a strong resurgence for an onshore wind market that spent years constrained by restrictive distance regulations.

Breaking regulatory barriers in the Polish onshore wind market

The successful financing of the Wałcz project is far more than a capital injection; it serves as a regulatory turning point for Poland’s renewable landscape:

  • Overcoming historical constraints: Poland's onshore wind sector suffered a severe slowdown following the introduction of the controversial 10H distance rule in 2016. This regulation prohibited turbine installations within a distance of less than ten times the total tip height, often exceeding 2,000 metres, from residential areas, a threshold four times stricter than typical European standards that effectively locked out 99.7% of the country’s land.
  • A robust merchant strategy: Demonstrating the commercial maturity of the Polish market, RP Global is advancing this asset under a merchant business model without relying on government subsidies. The developer will sell the generated electricity directly into the spot market while actively exploring long-term corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) to lock in future revenue stability.

Technical specifications and construction milestones of the Wałcz project

Located in the wind-rich West Pomeranian Voivodeship, construction activities on the Wałcz facility have already commenced onsite:

  • Advanced turbine technology: The wind farm will be equipped with 21 modern Nordex N149 turbines, specialized models engineered to optimize power generation under medium wind speed conditions.
  • Grid integration timeline: According to current development schedules, full commercial operation and grid connection are targeted for completion in the fourth quarter of 2027.
  • Deepening a two-decade footprint: This asset represents RP Global’s sixth wind farm development in Poland, solidifying the company's two decades of continuous industrial commitment to the region.

Driving energy sovereignty and flexible infrastructure funding across Europe

This large-scale transaction highlights a broader strategic shift among European financiers toward securing regional energy sovereignty and phasing out dependence on imported fossil inputs. Using flexible financing instruments, such as large-scale unitranche facilities, allows developers to accelerate project execution from early planning stages through to physical deployment. As Eastern European nations systematically ease legacy land-use barriers, the path is clearing for a multi-billion-euro wave of subsequent onshore wind investments.
