TRACS International Training: Geothermal

29/06/2026

This one-day course will be run as an exercise -based one -day training event focusing on a hydrothermal reservoir system that is based on a development setting in the Drava basin, Central Europe.

Participants (of mixed backgrounds) will approach the exercises in groups to determine a notional geothermal field development plan including well spacing, heat flow rates, resource estimation and the influence of natural fractures on the system. The hands -on evaluation employs paper -based exercises explore the impacts of the geology and reservoir flow processes on the geothermal resource in closed loop and open reinjection developments. At the end of the training, participants will appreciate the array of risks and uncertainties that impact the assessed project. Required skill levels will range from basic understanding to intermediate knowledge, and this will be reflected in the makeup of the teams.

Course Tutor: Dr Edmund Stephens MA (Oxon), DPhil Reservoir Engineer, Reservoir Modelling

Edmund mainly tutors courses the Reservoir, Open Air, and Master Class (reservoir modelling, fractured reservoir) series. He has a career background in Shell, TRACS and AGR. Edmund is an active member of GESGB, SPE, AAPG and speaks at conferences on reservoir modelling.
