EDEN Renewables India strengthens with 1,350 MWp of new solar power plants

02/10/2020

Renewable Eren EDF and Total, two world leaders in renewable energy, announce EDEN Renewables India, their joint venture for solar energy in the Indian market and owned equally, won three photovoltaic power projects totaling 1,350 MWp in Rajasthan, northern India.

EDEN Renewables has established itself among the leaders of the solar market in India, with a current global portfolio of more than 2,200 MWp of capacities in development, construction and operation spread over the states of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, 'Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Between April and July 2020, EDEN Renewables India won:

  • two 450 MWp photovoltaic projects [1] during the last calls for tenders organized by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI VIII and SECI IX);
  • a 450 MWc1 photovoltaic project during the last call for tenders organized by the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and with which a 25-year electricity sales contract (PPA) was signed at the end of August 2020.

With an expected production of more than 2,300 GWh per year, these future solar power plants will supply the equivalent of nearly 2 million people in India with electricity each year.

Construction will start in the first half of 2021 and commissioning is scheduled for early 2022.

These recent successes follow the signing last year by EDEN Renewables India of long-term 25-year electricity sales contracts for four photovoltaic projects. These projects in northern India represent a total of 716 MWp [2] of capacity to be installed. One of them, "SECI III" (450 MWp), located in Rajasthan, has been under construction since April 2020. Its commissioning is scheduled for the first half of 2021.

EDEN Renewables India has been developing, building and operating photovoltaic power plants in India since 2016. Through their local presence, and in particular a team of experts based in New Delhi, EDF Renouvelables and Total Eren are already operating four photovoltaic plants in India.

Fabienne Demol, Executive Vice President - Global Head of Development at Total Eren, said:
“With these three photovoltaic plants, we are very pleased to have taken a new step forward following the signing of four long-term power purchase contracts last year. I would like to extend my congratulations to all the teams for this success, which occurs despite the COVID-19 crisis. I am enthusiastic about the idea of working on these photovoltaic projects with our partner EDF Renewables, through our joint subsidiary EDEN Renewables India, which plays a key role in achieving our ambitions in the Indian market. Together, we are committed to providing both sustainable and low-carbon electricity that meets the Indian government's goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in India  ” .

Frédéric Belloy, International Director of EDF Renewables , added:
“We are pleased to have won 1,350 MWp of additional photovoltaic projects through EDEN Renewables India. These new successes will significantly strengthen the position of our joint venture with our partner Total Eren. These successes underline the remarkable level of expertise reached by EDEN Renewables India in the field of photovoltaic energy.. These emblematic projects are perfectly consistent with the EDF group's Cap 2030 strategy, which aims to double its net renewable energy capacities, at the global level, between 2015 and 2030 by increasing them from 28 GW to 50 GW. Through our developments in renewable energies, we are happy to participate in the ambition of the Indian government to increase the production of electricity of non-fossil origin to 220 GW by 2022”.
