Europe demands continued gas supplies from Russia

01/11/2018

Elena Burmistrova, the General Director of Gazprom Export, announced negotiations with companies in Europe that want to buy nearly 50 billion cubic meters of fuel per year in addition to the existing volumes, as she stated at the Eurasian Economic Forum in Verona.

According to experts, the United States can state as many times as they like that the statement has no basis in fact, but the statistics show the opposite. For example, the desire of the Federal Republic of Germany to "get hooked on the Russian gas needle" and in the future to become the main gas hub of Europe is obvious.

According to “Ekonomika Segodnya”, earlier, under pressure from the American side, Europe decided to accelerate the transition to “green energy”, as well as to implement programs to save imported fuel. This was supposed to lead to a sharp reduction in gas supplies from Russia, as well as to "save" the continent from the supposedly existing threat of energy dependence on Moscow.

By the end of 2018 gas supplies to Europe will amount to 205–207 billion cubic meters of gas. The share of fuel from Russia in the European gas market is nearly 40%. Thus, over four years the volume of gas supplies from Russia has increased by 60 billion cubic meters per year.

According to the publication, it must be understood that in a year two new routes are scheduled to be launched at once - “Nord Stream - 2” and the first stage of the “Turkish Stream”. According to the publication, it is not by chance that today the EU they started talking about the fact that the construction of the third stage of a gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea is a very likely and expected event. This means that the construction of Nord Stream - 3, as well as the new branches of the Turkish Stream in the case of the continuation of the conflict in the Ukraine, becomes almost inevitable. According to the author of the article, only a confrontation in Europe or a world crisis can postpone this perspective, which is what the Americans want.

Previously, the need for Nord Stream - 3 was associated with the wear and tear of the gas transmission system of the Ukraine. The head of Gazprom, Aleksey Miller, has made the construction of Nord Stream 3 possible, this can happen if there is corresponding demand in  Europe for energy from Russia. The Director of the Institute of National Energy Serhiy Pravosudov stated in an interview with the Federal News Agency that it was necessary to understand that even after Nord Stream - 2 and the Turkish Stream would be completed, at least 10 billion cubic meters of gas would need to be transported via the Ukrainian gas transmission the system.

Gas supplies from Russia to Europe will only grow in the future. At the same time, European countries are afraid of this and declare their intentions to reduce supplies from the Russian Federation.

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is unstoppable, Jonathan Stern of the Oxford Institute for Energy Research states. The implementation of the project of the second branch of the Nord Stream gas pipeline is in full swing. In the article of the Polish edition Polityka answering the question “Is there still a chance of stopping construction”, the British expert Johnathan Stern gave an unequivocal answer. He stated that many Western companies that were clients of the Russian Gazprom considered the Ukraine a problem. In connection with the unstable relations of Russia and the Ukraine, the new round of the “gas war”, they would prefer to exclude the possibility of transit through the Ukrainian territory.
