Repsol starts the production of the Reggane project in Algeria

18/12/2017

  • The Reggane Norte gas fields are expected to reach their maximum production capacity, 8 million cubic meters of gas per day, at the beginning of next year.
  • The consortium responsible for developing the project consists of Repsol (29.25%), Sonatrach (40%), both operators, together with DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG (19.5%) and Edison (11.25%).

Repsol has started production in the gas fields of Reggane Norte, in Algeria, completing one of Repsol's most significant projects in Africa. Reggane Norte is located in the Algerian desert, about 1,500 km southwest of Algiers.

The Algerian Prime Minister, Ahmed Ouyahia, the Managing Director of Repsol, Josu Jon Imaz, and the President and CEO of Sonatrach, Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour, participated in the ceremony to start production, along with other prominent members of the Algerian Government and of the consortium companies.

The Reggane project is expected to reach its maximum production capacity in January 2018, 8 million cubic meters of gas per day, equivalent to 10% of the gas demand in Spain.

This project reaffirms Repsol's commitment to the transition towards a less carbon-intensive energy model. Currently, gas represents two thirds of Repsol's total production and 75% of its reserves.

The Reggane-Nord consortium is jointly operated by Repsol (29.25%) and Sonatrach (40%). DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG (19.5%) and Edison (11.25%) are also part of the same.

The Reggane Norte project consists of six gas fields (Azrafil Sud-Est, Kahlouche, Kahlouche Sud, Tiouliline, Sali and Reggane). It is estimated that the production in Reggane Norte will extend until 2041.

The project includes a processing plant for gas extracted from the six existing fields and has needed relevant infrastructure. Specifically, 209 km of gas collectors, more than 160 km of roads and a 74 km pipeline have been built to connect Reggane Norte with the country's export facilities.
