Students and graduates facing up to the challenges of finding work in the wake of the pandemic have an opportunity to gain career advice at an online event. 

Social enterprise AFBE-UK Scotland, which supports aspiring engineers from under-represented groups, is hosting its popular careers programme on Tuesday, September 15 (9am-4pm).

The Transition event, in partnership with Spirit Energy, takes on greater importance as young people contend with a reduced number of job opportunities due to Covid-19. 

The day-long seminar has two-parts. Presentations by senior management at Spirit Energy form the first element, with the second section – limited to 20 people - consisting of mock interviews and career advice from Spirit Energy staff. 

Ollie Folayan, chairman of Aberdeen-based AFBE-UK Scotland, said: 
“The format and content of Transition have been carefully planned to ensure that those attending enjoy the greatest possible benefit from their participation. These events have always proved popular in previous years and we’re confident this year’s online programme will also be of value.” 

The Transition initiative has supported more than 2,500 young professionals over the years, with face-to-face events previously held in Aberdeen and Edinburgh. A survey revealed that 70% of people who attended the programme have been successful in securing relevant positions within 12 months of the event. In addition, 90% of attendees said that Transition had provided them with the confidence they required for interviews. 

Established in 2011, AFBE-UK Scotland has two other engagement programmes: its schools programme, NextGen, in which industry professionals give up their time to highlight engineering as a career choice to pupils and Real Projects, which invites industry professionals to speak on their area of expertise. 

AFBE-UK Scotland promotes diversity and inclusion. It encourages all young people, particularly those of black and minority ethnic (BME) origin, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).
