Description

Calpine Corporation is America’s largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources with robust commercial, industrial and residential retail operations in key competitive power markets.

Founded in San Jose in 1984, Calpine understands that its role is not simply to harness the power of natural resources, but to protect them as well. Calpine was established on the premise that a strong commitment to the environment is inextricably linked to excellence in power generation and corporate responsibility. Since the company’s founding, Calpine has led the power industry in its unwavering commitment to clean, energy-efficient and renewable power generation.

California overview

Calpine is committed to powering California with clean, reliable and affordable electricity from fuel-efficient energy resources. Calpine operates the state’s largest and most modern fleet of low-carbon combined-cycle and combined heat and power plants fueled by natural gas. We are also the largest renewable power provider in California. The company's generation capacity of nearly 6,300 MWs is equivalent to approximately 11 percent of the California Independent System Operator’s peak power demand.

Geysers overview

Calpine Corporation is the nation’s largest renewable geothermal power producer. The company operates 13 geothermal power plants in The Geysers region of northern California and is capable of generating up to 725 megawatts of green energy around the clock. Calpine uses a natural, clean energy source - heat from the earth’s interior - to produce electricity. Because geothermal power plants do not burn fossil fuel, they have an inherent environmental advantage and are helping meet California’s clean air goals.

Located north of San Francisco in the Mayacamas Mountains, The Geysers is the single largest geothermal electrical operation in the world.

East Region overview

Calpine is committed to providing reliable, clean and affordable electricity from fuel-efficient energy resources in the company's East Region. Their fleet of advanced-technology facilities distinguishes Calpine as one of the region’s most efficient and flexible energy providers and assures a reliable power supply when our customers need it most.

Calpine’s 29 operating plants in our East Region span 12 U.S. states and Canada. Most of the power Calpine generates in the region comes from highly efficient technology that integrates natural gas and steam turbines to provide energy reliability 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Complementing these combined-cycle facilities are “peaker” plants, which can quickly begin operation when demand is greatest, and cogeneration plants, highly efficient facilities that concurrently produce power and steam for industrial customers. In addition, the 4 MW Vineland Solar Energy Center in New Jersey brings renewable capacity to the regional portfolio, and the Bluestone and High Bridge Wind Farms are under advanced development in the state of New York.

Texas overview

Calpine is one of Texas’ largest power companies, capable of reliably delivering more than 9,000 MWs of electricity for the Texas power market - representing nearly 12 percent of ERCOT’s installed capacity.
